OK, what is 3G?

Does UMTS mean the same as 3G?

Yes, the word UMTS stands for 3G. UMTS is the dominant 3G solution being developed, representing an evolution from the GSM network standards, interoperating with a GSM core network. UMTS will use a wideband CDMA technology for transmission, and a more efficient modulation than GSM. This will allow UMTS to reach higher utilization, and offer higher bandwidth to the end-user. UMTS stands for “Universal Mobile Telecommunication Standard”.

For whom 3G is interesting / reasonable

Basically 3G / UMTS is suitable for customers that want to use mobile data services, like downloading large e-mails with attachments or streaming videos or simply surfing the web at high speed.

UMTS offers a data transmission rate which customers until now had only known from fixed lines. Consequently they can use regular Internet services and content also while on the move.

Which data speed is possible with 3G?

Currently, the amount of data (including voice and all other information like SMS) you can send via most networks ranges from 14.4 to 19.2 Kbps. Third generation technology will handle information at speeds up to 144 Kbps.

Are 3G phones the same as other phones?

Yes, they’re just capable of a lot more. You’ll be able to talk to anyone else using a mobile phone or fixed line anywhere.

And what will 3G enable me to do?

At the moment you can send SMS messages and surf limited WAP sites, get stock quotes and access other simple services via your phone. But with a 3G phone you will be able to receive all sorts of services. You’ll be able to surf the web properly at high speed without content restrictions, receive all sorts of videos including video mail, news clips. You also have the video telephony feature and be able to download MP3s. More services are being developed continuously.

Is 3G available everywhere in the UK?

You’ll be able to use your phone everywhere but there is some limitation to the full 3G service. When you don’t have access to the full 3G network you will still be able to talk and send SMS. When you are within a range of a 3G network you’ll be able to use all features mentioned earlier like video telephony and high speed Internet.

Could the radiation of 3G be dangerous for me?

Since the radiation of UMTS handsets is significantly below the ones of GSM phones, UMTS handsets are not dangerous for their users. Due to regular measurements of their handsets SANYO ensures to comply within the limits. All SANYO handsets fall below the international guidelines of SAR-Limits.
